The Magical Sunrise at Angkor Wat

Updated: Jan 30, 2021

They say the sunrise at the great temples of Angkor is one not to be missed. So here we were, headed to Cambodia wanting to experience this amazing moment. While you can walk through Angkor Wat, we chose to rent a tuk tuk with a driver for the entire day. If you do not have tickets to the temple, the tuk tuk driver can show you the ticket office before entering Angkor Wat. You will also get your picture taken with each ticket to prevent you from sharing unused tickets with other people.

Angkor Wat is the biggest and most popular temple in Angkor. It’s that attraction you see on Instagram or travel magazines and you really want to go there. Coming here especially for the sunrise is really popular. We made sure to be there by 5am and when we got dropped off, we were surprised to see that there were already crowds waiting to see the sunrise too. The sunrise is as magical as they say, but it also means sharing the magical moment with thousands of people.

Despite the huge swaths of tourists, Angkor Wat is indeed an impressive place. Inside the temple, the carvings, pillars, and statues are still in great condition. The scale of Angkor Wat is also amazingly impressive. There’s no denying that it is the largest temple in the world.

Another place not to be missed is Ta Prohm, also a beautiful temple, bound by massive roots of huge trees. This is where the famous tomb raider movie was filmed.

It’s hard not to get temple fatigue at Angkor wat, that’s why we recommend spending at least 2-3 days here to split up the sightseeing. The conventional wisdom is to do sunrise at Angkor Wat and Sunset at the Bayon Temple in Angkor Thom.
