Mountain Gorillas at Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda
This is a National Park in northwest Rwanda which covers 160 square kilometres and encompasses five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga mountains. Definitely the most beautiful view of any natural park that I have ever seen.
The first thing that was a priority on my to- do list was Mountain Gorilla Tracking. Gorilla Tracking in Rwanda is second to none in attracting tourists into the country. The trek took around 5 to 6 hours but just watching those gorillas in action made time fly so easily.
Immediately after, I went to see the Golden Monkeys in the magnificent Virunga Mountains which are becoming very rare. The golden monkey trek is worth going for while in Volcanoes National Park as it is a rare and delightful experience not to be missed! This exciting adventure offers an epic encounter with a rare and beautiful species of monkeys called “Golden Monkeys”. As the name suggests, the monkeys have a striking golden fur coat, and add to their spritely character, are quite lovely to watch and offer excellent photography. However, golden monkey tracking is less strenuous compared to the gorilla tracking so I was done in around 3 hours.
At night time we went for a guided walk and mountain bike excursion. One of the most popular walks will lead you to the Musanze village where you can meet and interact with the local people. The outskirts of Musanze feature a nature walk to the beautiful Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. You can stroll around the lake, snapping photos and videos of the scenery as you go. I was already too tired from all that walking so we opted to go in a canoe. They even let me row it! I had so much fun. The people there are so kind and sweet, I just did not want to leave.
Before I left, they took us to one special place called The Kigali Genocide Memorial. The guide told us that it commemorates the 1994 Rwandan genocide and the remains of over 250,000 people are interred there. The place had a whole wall of pictures of people who passed away during the tragedy as well as the remains of those people that are locked up with a glass barrier. May their souls rest in eternal peace.
On my last day, goodbyes were said with a heavy heart, but I know that that was one of the best experiences that I have ever had with National parks and I do intend to go back again someday. I hope that you too will decide to go to this place as well.
