The Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, Israel is the oldest existing Islamic monument, built as early as 7th century. The rock on which it’s built is important to both Muslims and Jews. In Muslim tradition, this is where Prophet Muhammad ascended into heaven, while the Jews believe this is where Abraham, the parent of Israelites, prepared to sacrifice his son. It is not a mosque as many believe, and today researchers are still dumbfounded as to its original purpose. With a golden dome, the building dazzles like a mass of extraordinary light in the day and shines romantically in the Jerusalem setting sun
Dome of the Rock, Jerusalem
It’s not all about the Dome in Jerusalem though, few places in the world are as evocative as the Western Wall, where worshippers fervently recite scriptures and stick paper prayer items on this 2000-year-old wall, hoping for divine answers. The Western “Wailing” Wall partly surrounds the Temple Mount.
Temple Mount, is the reason wars have been started and is hotly contested today. For thousands of years, it has been venerated as one of holiest sites for Christians, Muslims and Jews. Jewish tradition maintains this is where King Solomon built the temple and also the second temple built by Zerubabbel which was later ruined by the Roman Empire. The Muslims on the other hand revere it as the “Noble Sanctuary” which houses one of the 3 Sacred Mosques.
