Cape Town

Warmed by the African sun, the city is dominated by a towering, table-shaped mountain, set on a peninsula of soaring, rocky heights and lush valleys, where two oceans converge- Indian and Atlantic. Immense natural beauty, and the fast pace and bright lights of a great urban centre meld effortlessly here. Firmly positioned on the international map, Cape Town offers a myriad things to do and places to see, whatever your tastes, inclinations or budget.  It's a place where old and new harmoniously converge - in history, architecture, cultural pursuits and the essence of its people.

Rapidly becoming one of the 'must visit' destinations in the world, Cape Town holidays are a hard-to-beat experience. On Cape Town holidays you can sight-see in the morning, hike up the mountain in the afternoon and cool off in the evening by taking in a stunning Cape sunset washed down with a world-class local wine. A delicious meal leaves you satisfied and ready for another day's adventure in the Cape. Unless you still want to go partying, that is.

Cape Town's most popular attractions  are the Table Mountain.  With the city stretching to its lower slopes, the mountain dominates Cape Town. There is a network of over 550 walks covering Table Mountain, but the quickest and easiest method to enjoy the dazzling views of Table Bay and the Atlantic is by taking the short cableway trip to the top. Travelling up the cable car in the early morning helps to avoid the queues, and is usually the time when the wind is at its calmest. (The cable car cannot run in high winds or thick cloud, so try to get up the mountain early in your trip to avoid disappointment.)
Robben Island is another popular attraction, the prison which held Nelson Mandela during the Apartheid era.
Cape Point with its dramatic scenery and stunning beaches en route are not to be missed; the long sandy beach of Muizenberg, Simon's Town, South Africa's principal naval base, and Boulders Beach, home of a colony of African penguins, Cape Point, offering magnificent vistas and Hout Bay, with its magnificent backdrop of Chapman's Peak, sandy beach and fishing harbour.draw the most attention, it would be a shame to stop there.
Cape Winelands offer breathtaking scenery, historic homesteads on wine estates, superb restaurants and of course, copious quantities of fabulous wines. In between quaffing, explore the historic town of Stellenbosch with its oak-lined avenues and national monuments. In Franschhoek the Huguenot Monument honours the French settlers of 1688, and the Huguenot Commemorative Museum showcases the rich heritage and history of the valley. And the wine town of Paarl boasts the Language Monument, with its striking design and the stunning vistas, it is the only monument to a language in the world. Visit the Cape Winelands for a day or spend a few nights – relax and enjoy the food and wine.
Stretching east from Cape Town is Hermanus, a small charming seaside town provides some of the easiest and best land based whale-watching.  The southern right whales migrate to Walker Bay to calve between June and November, although the best whale-watching months are August - October. Also in the area are some wine estates which offer wine tasting. And nearby is Great White shark cage-diving for the daring. Take a full day tour and head out by boat in Gaansbaai to surface view, snorkel or scuba cage dive this magnificent predator in its natural feeding ground.

Naturally there's a full range of Cape Town accommodation to suit all your needs, whether you're a regular visitor and want a place that feels like home or a newlywed couple looking to celebrate romance. For parents who want a place to stay that not only caters for children but makes the grown-ups feel like they're on holiday too, a Cape Town family holiday will be what you're looking for.
People love the energy, vibe and multicultural mix that define this special place but speak to the locals, step off the beaten path and your Cape Town holiday will be immeasurably enriched.
The best time to visit Cape Town may be influenced by your interests - there are different seasons for the perfect Cape Town beach holiday, whale watching or to see the carpets of wild flowers.
Guided day tours are always a convenient way of exploring a city and its surrounds although Cape Town is really easy and accessible enough for you to do it on your own if you feel adventurous and have time.

The city is a natural stop for many of the overland tours, but there are plenty of options for golf-enthusiasts, whale-watchers, people who want to see the Garden Route ... and so much more.
A holiday in Cape Town will never be long enough... there's lots to do. South African summer holidays (usually from the first week of December to mid January), and Easter are peak periods for visiting Cape Town, so you should plan trips reasonably in advance, and be prepared for lots of company. Restaurants are full and many visitors from upcountry book them weeks before arriving in Cape Town.
