Mombasa South Coast

DIANI BEACH
Diani lies on the coast approximately 40 kms south of Mombasa and is Kenya's most popular beach resort with many excellent hotels, restaurants and marine sports centres. The beach itself is a long stretch of white sand fringed by palms and other indigenous bush. Although there are many hotels, most are low-rise and set in large gardens so you do not feel overwhelmed with concrete. Many hawkers frequent the beach selling their wares.  The South Coast vibe is chilled and relaxed - and it's a great place for family beach holidays as there are activities for all ages including glass-bottom boats, kiddies clubs and golf courses.

  HOW TO GET THERE

Seeing as it is Kenya's second largest city and premier port, Mombasa is pretty well-connected in terms of transport. You can fly here direct from Nairobi several times a day which land at Moi International airport and then transfer by ferry to South Coast which would take another 2 hours depending on the traffic and the wait at the ferry terminal.
Alternatively fly direct from Wilson Airport Nairobi direct to Ukunda Airstrip, a flight of about 1 hour  and then about 20-30min to most of the South Coast Hotels.
The road between Nairobi and Mombasa is well-tarred and the ride should take about 10 hours. There is also a railway line running from Mombasa westwards - book a first-class ticket and hop aboard for an overnight train ride.

  CLIMATE

There are two wet seasons known as long and short rains. The long rains (heavy downpours with storms) run from late March until June, and the short rains (less severe) from November to January.
