Amboseli

AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK

Amboseli National Park covers 392 km2, and forms part of the much larger 3000 Km2 Amboseli ecosystem. Amboseli is famous for its big game and its great scenic beauty - the landscape is dominated by Mt Kilimanjaro. The national park embodies 5 main wildlife habitats (open plains, acacia woodland, rocky thorn bush country, swamps and marshland) and a generally dry lake bed - Lake Amboseli.

Large concentrations of wildlife occur here in the dry season, making Amboseli a popular tourist destination. The principal attraction at Amboseli is its vast herds of elephants. The bulls have some of the largest tusks in Kenya. There are zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, impala and leopard, caracal and serval cat can be seen. Birdwatchers can see pelicans, bee-eaters, kingfishers, African fish eagle, martial eagle and pygmy falcon.

  HOW TO GET THERE

As with most destinations in Kenya your starting point will be Nairobi. You can fly to Nairobi from many international cities and once there it is possible to get to Amboseli via road or on a small plane.
Amboseli is 240 kilometres by road via Namanga or 230 kilometres if one chooses to go along the Mombasa-Emali Road from Nairobi. The great thing about travelling by road in Kenya is that many times you will be able to see wild animals roaming close to the roadside even when not in one of the National Parks.
You can also get to Amboseli on a small chartered plane, the flight will only take about an hour and in that time you can take in some of the natural beauty of the landscape through your window.

  CLIMATE

There are two wet seasons known as long and short rains. The long rains (heavy downpours with storms) run from late March until June, and the short rains (less severe) from November to January.
