Lamu

A magical place, Lamu is an historical town with many old buildings, narrow streets and friendly Arab population. It has long been a trading center and already in the 11th Century dhows sailed along the East African coast to Arabia, Persia and Indiab, but with the abolition of slavery in 1907 the economy of the island went into decline. In the early 1970s, Lamu was discovered by 'hippies' and they loved the laisser faire attitude of its people and ambiance. They have gone, but tourist are still coming to Lamu, it has now some good hotels, guesthouses.  In recent years, some wealthy people have restored the beautiful grand houses in authentic style and whose houses are sometimes for rent, inclusive cook, staff and all comfort.

Life for the Arab/Bajuni people has not changed much, men still wear full length robes (khanzus) and caps (kofia), the ladies in bui-bui. The young generation is very friendly and open to visitors loving to make some 'business' deals. Meeting them is easy, as Lamu has no cars - only donkey's - and everybody meets everybody on the two main streets.

Shela, a small fishing village next to Lamu is becoming very fashionable with the jet set, ceo's and royalty, who have restored beautiful old houses in their past glory. It has also one of the best best hotels on Lamu Island, Peponi Hotel  and there is the fantastic 14 kilometre beach. The smaller islands of the archipelago provide an exclusive setting for honeymoons and romantic getaways - we recommend the luxurious retreats of Manda Bay or Kiwayu Safari Village for a slice of Kenya beach paradise.

  HOW TO GET THERE

Lamu is best accessed by air. There are scheduled flights daily from Nairobi and Malindi. The island is serviced by an airstrip on neighbouring Manda Island. The strip can also be used by private charters. A dhow ferries arriving passengers to either Lamu town or Shela. Many yachts also come to Lamu, often sheltering in the channel near Shela.

  CLIMATE

The Winds
The Eastern Coast of Africa has two seasonal winds. The South-East Trade (Kusi) which blows from May to November, a strong gusty wind which brings the rains, rough water and silt from the Tana River. During this time most boat movement takes place along inshore channels. The North-East Trade (Kas Kazi) blows from December to April. This summer wind brings calm, clear water and the fishing season. Occasionally there are strong winds, but storms are rare.
The Tides
There are two Low and High tides daily, with 12 hours between each. The cycle is about one hour later each day. The difference between High and Low tides vary with the moon. Spring Tide occurs every two weeks on the Full and New moons. During spring tides the current is strong in front of Peponi. Neap Tide occurs on both half moons and has minimal difference between High and Low tide. Since the movement is so little, the water tends to be at its clearest over the Neap Tides.
