MASAI MARA.

The Masai Mara Game Reserve is often called simply "The Mara" which is the Maa word meaning "Mottled" - a reference to the patchy landscape The reserve is unfenced and its southern reaches border the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. The two countries share the vast Serengeti plains, with the wildlife free to roam between Kenya and Tanzania in search of good grazing - or prey.... Rainfall in the ecosystem increases markedly along a south-east-north-west gradient, varies in space and time, and is markedly bimodal. The Sand, Talek and Mara are the major rivers draining the reserve. The terrain of the reserve is primarily open grassland, with seasonal riverlets. In the south-east region are clumps of the distinctive Acacia Tree. The reserve is especially famous for the high amount of predators, such as lions and cheetah, with viewing of all the Big Five a distinct possible in a day! The Masai Mara also has one of the largest densities of lion in the world and is no wonder this is the home of the BBC wildlife channels Big Cat Diary.
The Great Migration is termed as the greatest show on earth. Nowhere in the world is there a movement of animals as immense as the wildebeest migration, over two million animals migrate from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to the greener pastures of the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya during July through to October. The migration has to cross the Mara River in the Maasai Mara where crocodiles will prey on them. This is one of the highlights as the animals try and cross the Mara River alive. In the Maasai Mara they will be hunted, stalked, and run down by the larger carnivores. There is no better time to visit the Mara than during the Great Migration. The sound of the approaching herd is a deep, primal rumbling of thundering hooves and low grunts. Numerous amounts of these wildebeest, zebras and antelopes are unable to return to The Serengeti, thus increasing the abundance of wildlife in The Mara for year round viewing.
