SMART QUOTE

"The world is round and
the place which may
seem like the end may
also be the beginning."

-Ivy Baker Priest

DID YOU KNOW

There are more than 700
types of pure breed dogs.
The common belief that
dogs are colour blind is
false. Dogs can see colour
but it is not as vivid as we
see; it is like our vision at
twilight. Dogs and cats,
like people, are either
right handed or
left handed.

TRAVEL LAUGH

USAir recently introduced a
special half fare for wives
who accompanied their
husbands on business
trips. Expecting valuable
testimonials, the PR
department sent out
letters to all the wives
of businessmen who had
used the special rates,
asking how they enjoyed
their trip.

Letters are still pouring
in asking, "What trip?"

TRAVEL NEWS
HOW TO WHIZZ THROUGH AIRPORTS

Check in online
Keen to cut back on staff costs, airlines are desperate for us to check in at home. And why not? It’s quick, easy and means you can turn up at the airport 30 to 60 minutes before you flight, rather than two or three hours. In some cases, you can choose your own seat, online, too – so you get a nice window spot near the front while the mugs queuing at the airport get stuck at the back near the toilets.
And you can do the same on the return leg. Just nip into an internet café 24 hours before your flight to bag a good seat. You’ll need your passport numbers a well as booking references.

Travel light
The longest wait at the airport is at the baggage carousel, so it makes sense not to check bags. Most airlines also give children an allowance. If you have to check you bag check in last – that way your bags will come of first.

Sit towards the front of the plane
Always request a sit near the front. Not only is it quieter and less smelly, but you’ll also disembark first. This means you can zip through immigrations at the other end before the hordes.

Sort your rental car
If you’re collecting a hire car at the airport, and there are two or more of you traveling with checked bags, split up in the arrivals hall. One waits for the bags while the other nips to the car hire desk. In high season this can save hours. Only named drivers can pick up the car keys, though, so make sure you put all you names on the policy.

SOUTH AFRICA UPDATE

Because of South Africa’s all-year-round sunny weather most people can participate in adventure activities throughout the year.

There are adventure sports for daredevils and there are many others for those that are still young at heart. Abseilling, bungee jumping, hand gliding, paragliding, mountain biking and many others are all here all year round.

Sandboarding
South Africa is not well-endowed with snow, but we make up for it with some excellent sand dunes, and a great outdoor sport called ‘Sandboarding’.

Quad Cruising
With all-year great weather, spectacular outdoor scenery and a diverse variety of habitats, South Africa is a perfect playground for quad biking enthusiasts. There are over 60 different trails to experience, and a good selection of these also offer quad bikes for hire along with crash helmets. In South Africa you can ride in wildlife reserves, through the winelands, along the coast, up mountains and past waterfalls – the possibilities are almost endless, with enticing trails in every province.

Up Close and Personal with the Great Whites
Seeing a Great White for the first time is nothing like the movies. There is no sudden burst of foreboding music, no triangular fin cutting ominously through the water, just the crying of gulls, the braying of seals and the slapping of waves against the hull.

Skiing and Snowboarding
You’re not likely to come to South Africa for the snow. We’re a sun-blessed land and we don't get much snow at all, but what snow we do have, we make good use of.

Bungy jumping in South Africa
It's official - South Africa is home to the highest commercial bungee jump in the world.

Exploring Neptune’s World
For scuba diving enthusiasts, the possibilities are endless: there are coral reefs with brightly-coloured inhabitants that enjoy the warm Indian Ocean, the wrecks of dozens of ships that struck rock along the treacherous Cape south coast, and the icy waters of the Atlantic West Coast that offer a completely different scuba-diving experience.
