TRAVEL LAUGH

A blonde and a lawyer
sit next to each other
on a plane. The lawyer
asks her to play a
game. If he asked her
a question that she
didn't know the answer
to, she would have to
pay him $5; And every
time the blonde asked
the lawyer a question
that he didn't know
the answer to, the
lawyer had to pay the
blonde $50. So the
lawyer asked the
blonde his first
question, "What is the
distance between the
Earth and the nearest
star?" Without a word
the blonde pays the
lawyer $5.The blonde
then asks him, "What
goes up a hill with
four legs and down a
hill with three?" The
lawyer thinks about
it, but finally gives
up and pays the blonde
$50. Then the lawyer
asked her what the
answer was and without
a word the blonde gave
the lawyer $5.

SAFARI AND BEACH EXPERIENCE
Oldonyo Lengai becomes active once more

Thousands of villagers living around Mount Oldonyo Lengai in Ngorongoro District have fled their homes following a volcano eruption triggered by the earth tremors that have recently hit most parts of the northern zone. Two earthquakes rated as moderate hit the Oldonyo Lengai (Maasai for "mountain of God") volcanic mountain at 11:42pm on Sunday and at 12:10am the next day. The first, which measured 5.4 on the Richter scale, had its epicentre 13km east of the volcano. The second measured 4.7 on the Richter scale and had its epicentre 20km west of the volcano, with volcano experts saying both tremors had a shallow focus at the depth of 10km.Yet another tremor, this time measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale, hit about 100km (60 miles) away from this municipality on Tuesday evening.

Arusha Regional Police Commander Basilio Matei has cautioned tour operators against taking tourists around Mount Oldonyo Lengai, citing security reasons. Mount Oldonyo Lengai, standing at 3,450 meters above sea level, is the world`s only active sodium carbonite volcano and doubles as the world`s only volcano that emits natrocarbonatite lava. Natrocarbonatite lava usually contains almost no silicon and is much cooler in temperature than other lavas. The highly fluid lava measures 510 degrees Celsius, while basaltic lava that can be as hot as 1,100 degrees Celsius.

Man Eater: The History
During the construction of the railway bridge over the Tsavo River in 1898 by the British for what was then know as the Uganda Railway, approximately 140 workers were killed by two male lions, over a period of three months.

After repeated unsuccessful endeavors, the first lion was finally killed on the 9th December, 1898 during a night hunt. The second, three weeks later during a morning hunt, which almost cost Peterson his life. These lions were huge in size and the first of the two measured nine feet six inches from tip of the nose to the tip of his tail and stood three feet eleven and a half inches high.

The original site where theses events took place is where today’s Man Eaters Camp is located; the sites history goes all the way back to colonial days, during the construction of the Tsavo Bridge.

The chief engineer of the bridge was John Henry Peterson, who became a local hero for killing the famous Man Eaters of Tsavo, news of the event even reached the House of Lords and parliament, during the tenure of Prime Minister Lord Salisbury. Peterson became a local hero to the same worker who threatened his life moths earlier when the ordeal began and was presented a symbolic silver bowl together with prayers of thanks. Engraved on the bowl were the following words:

“SIR – We, your Overseer, Timekeepers, Mistaris and workmen, present you with this bowl as a token of our gratitude to you for your bravery in killing two man-eating lions at great risk to your own life, thereby saving from the fate of being devoured by these terrible monsters who nightly broke into our tents and took our fellow-workers from our side. In presenting you with this bowl, we all add our prayers for your long life, happiness and prosperity. We shall ever remain, Sir, your grateful servants.”

Baboo Purshotam Hurjee Purmar, overseer and clerk of works, on behalf of your workmen. Dated at Tsavo, January 30, 1899”

Peterson had always claimed the silver bowl from Tsavo to be his most highly prized trophy.
