TRAVEL TIPS
PRE–HOLIDAY CHECKLIST
PASSPORT
Every year countless travelers are refused entry at foreign airports because they have no visa, there aren’t enough blank pages in their passport or it expires in less than six months. Check the rules with your tour operator or the relevant consulate details from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office.

TRAVEL INSURANCE
Don’t even think about stepping onto a plane without insurance – it’s simply not worth the risk should anything go awry while you’re overseas. If you travel abroad more than twice a year, purchase annual travel insurance, but don’t buy from a tour operator or travel agent- you’ll pay over the odds. Check the small print if you plan to ski off-site-piste or go white-water rating

CAR HIRE
Before booking a hire car, compare prices. Most deals include insurance but will still leave you with a crippling excess if something goes wrong. You can insure yourself against excess charges. Also check the prices of child seats; you’ll save a packet by bring your own. If driving your own car abroad, invest in a red warning triangle, a first-aid kit, a reflective vest for each passenger and a set of spare bulbs (plus tools to fit them). Local laws vary – in some EU countries all this is mandatory, so the safest option is to bring the lot. Always carry your driving license, vehicle registration and insurance documents, and ensure you have breakdown cover. If you’re driving a company car, you’ll need letter that authorizes you to drive it.

BAGGAGE
Before you pack that extra pair of shoes, check airline luggage policy. Some airlines now charge you to check bags. If you can, travel with hand luggage only. British Airways allowance is the most generous: one bag measuring up to 56x45x25cm with no weight limit. Easyjet allows 55x40x20cm with no weight limit. Ryanair (55x40x20cm) and Flybe (50x35x23cm) both have 10kg limits. Thomsonfly allows you a total of 25kg divided between hand and checked baggage, with a 10kg limit on cabin bags. Most airlines won’t let you check a bag weighing more than 23kg – to comply with new health and safety regulations.

KASHMIR – HEAVEN ON EARTH, INDIA
VALID – Till 30September 2007
7 Nights & 8 Days
Set like a jewelled crown on the map of India, Kashmir is a multi-faceted diamond, changing its hues with the seasons - always extravagantly beautiful. Two major Himalayan ranges, the Great Himalayan Range and the Pir Panjal, surround the landscape from the north and south respectively. They are the source of great rivers, which flow down into the valleys, forested with orchards and decorated by lily-laden lakes.

The Mughals aptly called Kashmir ‘Paradise on Earth’ where they journeyed across the hot plains of India, to the valley’s cool environs in summer. Here they laid, with great love and care, Srinagar’s many formal, waterfront gardens, now collectively known as the Mughal Gardens. Anecdotes of four and five centuries ago describe their love for these gardens, and the rivalries that centred around their ownership. They also patronized the development of art & craft among the people of Kashmir, leaving behind a heritage of exquisite artisanship among thes people and making the handicrafts of the land prized gifts all over the world.

Kashmir is a land where myriad holiday ideas are realised. In winter, when snow carpets the mountains, there is skiing, tobogganing, sledge-riding, etc. along the gentle slopes. In spring and summer, the honey-dewed orchards, rippling lakes and blue skies beckon every soul to sample the many delights the mountains and valleys have to offer. Golfing at 2,700 m above the sea, water-skiing in the lakes and angling for prized rainbow trout, or simply drifting down the willow fringed alleys of lakes in shikaras and living in gorgeous houseboats are some of the most favoured ones.

CRUISE UPDATE

Life’s A Cruise
On Liberty of the Seas
The world’s largest cruise ship

It’s not only the largest of the luxury ships, but the most innovative and adventurous – and you won’t want to come off when it’s time to set foot on earth again! This mega city on the seas has so many attractions that will have you wishing there were more hours in a day.

Standing on its bow, the big boat would tower many of New York’s sky scrapers like the Chrysler building and Paris’ Eiffel Tower. Liberty of the Seas, the latest of the Royal Caribbean International’s ship boasts – hold your breath – a rock climbing wall with eleven routes to challenge your rock climbing skills 200 feet above sea level; a Flow Rider surf simulator 40 feet long and 32 feet wide on the 13th deck with a wave ferocity of 20 miles per hour, an ice skating rink, and cantilevered whirlpools suspended 112 feet above the sea sticking out like a huge saucer on the sea. And then besides that – just in case you haven’t had enough of the wow factor – if you stick around the 11th deck after a soaking massage in the cantilevered pool, just long enough, there’s the first boxing ring on a ship for those of you into kick-boxing or sparring, an adults only pool and an H20 Zone for the family with kids. For golfers, there’s a nine hole miniature golf course and you can hire the clubs for free . Oh – and something else – climb a deck higher and run around the jogging track with the fresh breeze swept off the seas to invigorate you with all the good sea ions.

Just in case you’re not a fitness freak like me but love to be spoilt in the spa, get into the Liberty Spa where there’s everything from hot stone massages to personal training, yoga, pilates and fitness and beauty talks by the experts to give you a new lease of life.

After all this action time on the higher decks take one of the glass paneled elevators to the Royal Promenade on the 5th deck. It’s where everyone mingles on the 445 long shopping, dining and entertainment boulevard – you can meet a new friend for coffee or a snack or shop till you drop in the duty free shops when you’re not at port – that’s when you pay duty.

Forget about counting calories on a cruise – you’re wasting time. The main restaurant is three decks high with a chandelier that’s taller than a deck. It’s all fine dining so better pack your smart and sultry evening wear. But if you’re into casual dining, there’s the option of the Windjammer on the 11th deck offering a variety of cuisines to the pizza parlour on the Promenade.

After all the fine dining and an action packed day, head out to the theatre to watch the best of the performing arts from around the world – it could be anything from ballet, synchronized artful acrobatics to comedy. Or take to the nightclubs on the higher decks or gamble in the casino. There’s something for everyone.

This is only a sample of what life is like on the Liberty of the Seas. It’s the ultimate get away from everyday life.

But here are a few extras on cruising
Got a family – never mind – there are special areas for the youngsters to keep them occupied leaving mum and dad free to relax.
There are plenty of sea sports like scuba diving to fast rides on the open seas. Try the wave rider where you can hit speeds of over 100kms per hour to get the adrenaline flowing.
It’s a floating city – the best thing is that you don’t have to pack and unpack every time you get to a new destination.
You earn loyalty points every time you sail on any of the Royal Caribbean International ships.
A working holiday – okay – there’s state-of- the- art conference rooms and business center.
Best of all – you don’t have to worry about traffic or drunken driving.
And it’s all very affordable.

Call Holiday Bazaar for bookings and more on making life a cruise.
